A local columnist went through some archives of the paper he writes for and collected a history of shocking gas prices as they were reported over the years by the paper. It's a fun read.

Just to be clear, I wasn't old enough to drive when gas was 49cents/gallon.

Julie,

When I bought my first aircraft (a used Piper PA-23 Apache), 80-octane aviation gas was 25 cents/gallon at Oakland Airport (no road or sales taxes).

Lest we forget that gas is still more pricey in Canada, Japan and Europe. It take away some of the pain to know that others suffer too. (I guess.)
