The best way I know of to remember them is that a forward-slash leans forward, a back-slash leans backwards:

/ - leaning forward
\ - leaning back

Arg, evil backslash, fie on it. Does it help to remember that the division symbol is a forward slash? (x = y / z) (For all values of z other than 0, haha.)

Like James said, i picture a little guy standing in the wind. Feet planted he either falls forwards or backwards, but like a weeble-wooble he never quite makes it to the ground.
