A blog for DevSource.com.

This blog was originally part of the blogs.ziffdavis.com site from May 2005 through June 2007 when the blog was moved to the Movable Type blog engine and hosted at blog.devsource.com/devlife.
The original blog was eventually shut down and I was given the posts so that I could host them on my own site.

Why am I using KVM and not remote desktop?

In response to my previous post I have had an email from one friend and saw a blog post from another asking this question. In fact, I use remote desktop all the time. I use it when I travel (which is a lot) and I use it when I telecommute from my kitchen to my office (which is just on another floor of my house) and I use it to work on some of my client's computers. I have even used it between the two computers that I have sharing the monitor when I wantd to copy and paste. But for some reason, I never thought of it for this purpose. Maybe because I'm not remote?

The second machine started out as a test box for Whidbey and I quickly moved to using VPC with that machine keeping a freshly installed Windows XP image that I could copy and install new bits on as they were released. But now I actually am using that for all of my VS2005 development and don't have plans to repave it. I still have VB6 and VS2003 apps that I am maintaining and the first machine has that and the rest of my life on it.

I'm not going to think about it too hard because I will soon be kicking myself for going to all the trouble when I could have just opened up the 2nd machine in a Remote Desktop window on monitor two. Too bad nobody asked me this question last time I wrote about my KVM. ;-)
