A blog for DevSource.com.

This blog was originally part of the blogs.ziffdavis.com site from May 2005 through June 2007 when the blog was moved to the Movable Type blog engine and hosted at blog.devsource.com/devlife.
The original blog was eventually shut down and I was given the posts so that I could host them on my own site.

Printing PDFs- oh, Postscript!

I have been aggravated for a long time with having to accept how long it takes to print PDFs. I have a fast pc with lots of RAM and a fast laser printer (HP1320) with not a lot of RAM. I frequently get PDFs that are multi page scans from clients. Printing them takes a while and pretty much locks up my computer. Earlier this year, after googling around for quite a while to find out what was going on , I received some advice to check the “Print as Image” option. That made the difference from what seemed like one minute per page to about 15 seconds per page. Someone also suggested the PostScript driver, but since I thought I had “solved“ the problem I never bothered and then forgot about that sage advice.

This morning, I decided I had had enough again and tried my luck with Google. This time I can up with the PlanetPDF site and it's forum. I did a search on “slow print” on the forum and voila there was my answer! I downloaded and installed the postscript driver for my printer and now the PDFs print out just like anything else. Yay.

Then I did a MSN desktop search in my Outlook, found the emails from six months ago and realized that I had in fact been given the same advice. Sorry about that Stephen. Thanks are way overdue.
